A Narrowed Life is an Expansive Life

When I was younger, I thought that I could be everywhere and everything. I thought that was the way to have a rich life. That you could pursue every hobby, you could get liked by everyone, you could visit every place and then by touching many things, you would have a rich life. Oh how wrong!

The longer I have been on this planet, the more I have realized that life actually grows out of choosing to occupy certain narrow spaces. Those who are choosy and picky get to enjoy a richer life. Perhaps it’s the richness that comes out of depth instead of breadth. I take my coffee at the same café, and because of this, I am intertwined with the people there. I know the baristas; they know how I love my coffee or tea.

I have maintained the car with the same mechanic for years. I have had the same barber; I go to the same car washing bay as I did 5 years ago. It seems life such a narrow life, yet out of this life has grown an expansiveness. By narrowing down, I have been able to touch the sweet spots of life.

I guess even organizations see this soon enough. That by getting clear about what they are trying to do and who they are trying to serve, it actually expands their abilities. Who is your consumer? Who are you trying to delight? Some tend to call it focusing. By for today, narrowing serves that purpose better. Choose to occupy the narrow spaces. For then, you can do magic within those narrow spaces.
